Why I'm Running

My passion has always been to do meaningful work wherever I am — work that helps someone else have a better quality of life.

I never would have seriously considered a role as an elected official until I was tapped by Governor Sanders. My "yes" was driven by that passion for meaningful work.

My home community needs a lot of work and organizing to be lifted out of its current status, but I have seen firsthand that it can be done. It will not be done quickly, or easily — but it can be done.

The belief that Helena-West Helena can be different is bold, considering its current state. That is why the vision needs to be bold, and the person helping to manage the vision also. Helena-West Helena is a jewel of the Mississippi Delta, and I know my experience growing up here, and living in other areas of the country, provides the blueprint for showing change is possible.

This campaign is community driven and community prioritized, and it runs on facts — the numbers tell the story. Decisions get made in one interest only: the interest of this city's residents.

Five Priorities

  1. Balance the City's Books

    The city carries more than $4 million in inherited debt, including back payroll taxes. Paying it down comes first — the plan is to clear the outstanding debt, and every other decision runs through that discipline.

  2. Fix the Infrastructure

    Water, solid waste, roads, derelict buildings, animal control. The city is deploying $28.5 million in state and federal funding into rebuilding the water system, and code enforcement is going after blight and unsafe structures.

  3. Grow the Economy

    Tourism, a stronger business presence, and new capital development. Helena sits on the Mississippi River next to St. Francis National Forest and Crowley's Ridge — the makings of an outdoor recreation destination, with a year-round downtown music and entertainment district built off the King Biscuit Blues Festival's draw.

  4. Beautification

    Beautification made the community's own top five in the Chamber of Commerce strategic survey. A cleaner city means tearing down derelict buildings, enforcing the code, and taking pride in how Helena-West Helena looks to residents and visitors alike.

  5. K-12 Success & Workforce Development

    "Education is the heartbeat of your community." Whitfield spent eight years as a teacher and assistant principal, and he wants Helena's schools and workforce training producing graduates who can build a life here.

  1. Helena, Arkansas

    Raised Here

    Son of Sam and Linda Whitfield. Graduated in 2011 in the second graduating class of KIPP Delta Collegiate in Helena.

  2. 2011–2015

    Colby College

    Earned his degree in English and literature at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he served four years as president of the Class of 2015.

  3. 2015–2022

    The Classroom

    Came straight home through Teach For America to teach at KIPP Delta, then spent seven years in New York City — teaching at Harlem Children's Zone and New Heights Academy Charter School, completing graduate work at Relay Graduate School of Education, and co-founding Lit for Life, a grassroots tutoring and writing company, with his wife, Shadey. In all, eight years as a teacher and assistant principal. His message to the country back then: "Look at us! Don't leave us out! There is talent in rural America!"

  4. Back Home

    Community & Economic Development

    Returned to Helena to work for the community organization Delta Magic and lead the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce as executive director. His Chamber strategic survey asked residents what they wanted; they answered: jobs, better schools, downtown dining and retail, public safety, and beautification. Those answers shape this platform.

  5. October 2, 2025

    Appointed Mayor

    Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders appointed Whitfield mayor of Helena-West Helena after the office was vacated by court order. He wasn't seeking political office. In his words: "The governor called me on a Monday, I said yes on Tuesday, and it was announced on Wednesday. The stars aligned."

On the Job Since October

First-hand experience in the mayoral role — the numbers and the record so far:

  • Holding town halls that bring the public into municipal government — "We recognize that people want to be involved."
  • Continued cost-cutting measures across city government, created a positive fund balance for City's general fund in first 10 months (Growth from -$175,000 to $174,000).
  • Restablished water reserve funding account
  • Put aggressive code enforcement to work on blight, derelict buildings, and fire safety.
  • Rode 100 miles by bike in April 2026 to promote Helena as an outdoor recreation destination.
